Ekaru Residential Estate, Bloemfontein, South Africa
Overview
Ekaru is a visionary residential estate on the outskirts of Bloemfontein that redefines home-building as an intuitive, creative process. Rather than prescribing a fixed set of house plans, our “Lego-style” modular typology gives future homeowners a kit-of-parts—walls, roofs, courtyards, and add-on blocks—that can be freely combined, expanded, or reconfigured over time to suit changing needs and budgets.
Design Concept
Kit-of-Parts Architecture
Each home is assembled from a palette of standardized modules—bedroom pods, living-dining wings, service cores—that slot together on a simple structural grid. This approach empowers residents to “build” their own layouts, selecting from a menu of spatial elements much like putting together Lego bricks.Flexible Growth
As families grow—or downsize—units can be added, removed, or reshuffled without costly demolition. Future phases of the estate can introduce new module types (home offices, studio pods, granny flats) that seamlessly integrate with the original structure.
